Install Wisp for Minecraft

Wisp adds spinning cameras, a Sentry, Anvil interceptors and a Pulsar jammer to Minecraft, all run from an in-game laptop.

Setup takes about 10 minutes and five steps. You don't need to have modded Minecraft before.

Wisp 0.1.0+cbdf10d · Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 · Windows or Mac
Your computer:
  1. Get Minecraft: Java Edition

Wisp needs Minecraft: Java Edition, the version for Windows and Mac computers. Minecraft from a console, phone or tablet (Bedrock Edition) can't load mods.

Already have it? Open the Minecraft Launcher, sign in, and skip to step 2.

Don't have it? Buy and download it from Minecraft's official site. One purchase covers Windows and Mac.

    Get Minecraft
Done when: the Minecraft Launcher opens and you're signed in. Then close the launcher before step 2.
  2. Install Fabric

Fabric is the free, standard tool that lets Minecraft load mods.

Download the Fabric installer (Windows) Download the Fabric installer (Mac)
    1. Open the file you just downloaded. If Windows says it protected your PC, click More info, then Run anyway.
    2. Open the file you just downloaded. If your Mac says it can't be opened, right-click (or Control-click) it, choose Open, then Open again.
    3. Stay on the Client tab.
    4. Set Minecraft Version to 1.21.1. It's not the newest, so you'll have to pick it from the list.
    5. Leave Loader Version as it is, and keep Create profile ticked.
    6. Click Install, wait for "Successfully installed", and close the installer.
Mac: nothing happens when you open it? The Mac installer needs Java. Install Java 21 from Adoptium (choose the .pkg), then open the Fabric installer again.
Done when: the installer said it installed Fabric for 1.21.1.
  3. Download the two mod files

You need Wisp itself and Fabric API, a free library Wisp is built on. Save both files somewhere easy to find, like your Downloads folder. Don't open them.

Download Wisp (6.0 MB) Download Fabric API (2.3 MB)
Done when: you have two files ending in .jar: wisp-0.1.0-cbdf10d.jar and fabric-api-0.116.17+1.21.1.jar.
  4. Put both files in your mods folder

    1. Press Windows + R.
    2. Type %appdata%\.minecraft and press Enter. A folder opens.
    3. Open the mods folder inside it. If there isn't one, make it: right-click, New › Folder, and name it exactly mods.
    4. Drag both .jar files from Downloads into mods.
    1. In Finder, open the Go menu and choose Go to Folder… (or press Shift + Cmd + G).
    2. Paste ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft and press Return.
    3. Open the mods folder inside it. If there isn't one, make it: File › New Folder, and name it exactly mods.
    4. Drag both .jar files from Downloads into mods.
Done when: the mods folder holds exactly those two files. Leave the files as they are: don't unzip or rename them.
  5. Start Minecraft with Fabric

    1. Open the Minecraft Launcher and choose Minecraft: Java Edition.
    2. Next to the big green Play button, click the version menu and choose fabric-loader-1.21.1.
    3. Click Play. If it warns about mods or unsafe versions, confirm and continue.

The first start takes a minute or two while Minecraft downloads version 1.21.1.

Done when: the title screen's bottom-left corner says Minecraft 1.21.1 and Fabric. You're ready to play.

Your first five minutes

The quickest way to see Wisp working, in a world of your own:

  1. Singleplayer › Create New World. Set Game Mode to Creative. Under World, a Superflat world type gives you open ground to work on. Click Create New World.
  2. Press E to open your inventory and click the Wisp tab. If you can't see it, use the arrows above the tabs to reach the next page. Everything in the mod is in there. Drag what you need into the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Place a Recon (the grey box) and put a Block of Redstone right next to it (find it with the search tab). Redstone is what turns the Recon on.
  4. Within a few blocks of it, place a Tripod and put a Wisp on top. Two black cables connect it to the Recon and the camera starts spinning.

See what it sees

  1. Place a Radio right next to the Recon. It cables itself on.
  2. Place a GCS with a Radio next to it, and a Workstation (the laptop) with a Radio next to it. All radios start on the same network, so there's nothing to set up.
  3. Right-click the Workstation. You're looking through the Wisp: drag to look around, scroll to zoom, V switches between colour and thermal. Esc closes it.

If something's not right

There's no fabric-loader-1.21.1 in the launcher

Close the launcher fully, run the Fabric installer again (step 2), and make sure Create profile is ticked and the version is 1.21.1. Then reopen the launcher.

Minecraft starts, but there's no Wisp tab

Check the version picker said fabric-loader-1.21.1 when you pressed Play, not "Latest release". Then check the two .jar files are directly inside mods, not in a folder inside it.

The game closes or shows an error about mods

Make sure mods holds only the two files from step 3. Mods for other Minecraft versions stop the game from starting. If you had other mods there, move them out for now.

The Wisp doesn't spin

Its Recon needs power: put a Block of Redstone directly beside the Recon, and keep the Wisp within 8 blocks of it.

The game runs slowly
